Submit Your FAFSA Now!
The FAFSA application is now available to complete earlier than ever! Starting in Fall 2016, the FAFSA will be open on October 1 of each year.
What is FAFSA?
FAFSA stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is the application students need to fill out in order to receive federal aid for college. It helps determine how much money you are eligible for in grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans each school year.
Why does the early availability date matter?
Because, in previous years the application did not open until January 1 giving you less time to complete your application. In addition, the earlier you apply the more likely you are to receive funds. Even though the deadline for the FAFSA is June 30th, applying early will give you an advantage when it comes to first come, first served, federal aid funds. For example, most schools only receive a limited amount of funding for things such as low-interest federal loans. Applying early will help ensure that you are considered for options such as this.
How do you apply?
There are three ways that you can apply for the FAFSA:
- You can go online and visit fafsa.gov to fill out the online application.
- If you would like to fill out the application on paper, you can download a PDF file of the FAFSA or order a copy of the PDF FAFSA by calling 1-877-433-7827.
- You can ask the financial aid office at your school if you can file the application with them. Some schools have a special software they use to submit your FAFSA for you when you are finished applying.
