Librarian Spotlight: Lizah Ismail

Lizah Ismail, Director of the Library at Limestone College, has always been interested in libraries; however, she did not think that interest would lead to her career today.

Lizah earned her B.A. in Journalism and History from Indiana University, and her M.A. in Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. Her first taste of library science was when she was a part time Library Assistant at the public library in Rome, G.A. It was during her time at the public library in Georgia that Lizah discovered her passion for libraries and library science. Following that experience, she enrolled at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, where she earned her M.S. in Library and Information Science.

After she earned her M.S., Lizah went on to work as a full-time librarian in public libraries. Since then, she has worked in several academic libraries including Misericordia University in Dallas, P.A. as the Head of Reference and Instruction.

In 2011, Lizah and her family’s next move led them to Spartanburg, S.C. when Lizah began as the Instruction and Outreach Librarian at Limestone. Lizah became Director of the Library in May of 2013. Having the ability to help students, faculty, staff and public patrons find what they need in the library is Lizah’s favorite part of her job. She believes Limestone succeeds because our staff and faculty go above and beyond to help students be successful.

When asked to give advice to non-traditional students going back to school Lizah says, “I think that motivation is key, and if you are pursuing a degree or career that you are passionate about, then you will be able to overcome any obstacles or challenges. But don’t hesitate to get help from college staff and faculty if needed.”

Lizah knows about overcoming obstacles and challenges. In August 2013, she was in a serious car accident that broke several cervical bones in her neck. Though patience and perseverance Lizah was able to recover and return to her role as Director of the Library. “Needless to say, I am so thankful,” she says. “I try to live every day to the fullest and enjoy and appreciate every experience, especially with family and friends.”
